Yep, this is what I get if enable dri

Could you post your xorg.conf file now? It doesn't look like the composite extension is being loaded at all.

It didn't work. What I got back was:
I guess this is where the problem is. However, I don't have ~/.xcompmgrrc, and I don't get that error message. Try running xcompmgr without the flags...

And I think the composite extension is being loaded though. Says this in the log:

"(II) Initializing built-in extension COMPOSITE"

Though I have no idea what im talking about.

maybe it wasn't installed properly. This file should exist: /usr/bin/xcompmgr

Well after trying to naviagate to that folder, it seems it doesn't exist. = (

Iv tried installing it repeatedly. Can you or somone give me a link and step by step instructions that worked for them?

But you know what; if the extension loads then you must have the file installed somewhere (I think). And I momentarily forgot that different dists might install things at different paths. type "locate xcompmgr" (make sure you have an updated database (this is done with this command: "updatedb")), and see where it is installed. If you find it, you should move it to a dir in your path, (like /usr/bin).

These are the closest finds to what you said it needs. Do I need to move it to "/usr/bin" ? or keep it the way it is.

/usr/local/bin/xcompmgr
/usr/local/man/man1/xcompmgr.1

You should probably keep it as it is. But now I'm confused. I might have misunderstood something before (For some reason my browser renders linuxquestion-pages really crappily making everything really annoying), but when you tried to run xcompmgr before, did you get "command not found"? If you did that dir isn't in your path, which would be very weird. In that case just chdir to /usr/local/bin and enter ./xcompmgr and see what happens. If I did miss something and you didn't get "command not found", then I really don't know. Try to install it again. I used this http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Xorg_X11_and_Transparency gentoo-wiki for installation, and you might find it helpful although you don't use gentoo...

Odd. I tried that just now and got:

andy@linux:~> cd /usr/local/bin
andy@linux:/usr/local/bin> ./xcompmgr
trying '/home/andy/.xcompmgrrc' as configfile

failed to open config file. does it exist?
No composite extension
andy@linux:/usr/local/bin>

Okedoke, got it to work. Only in KDE though... Is there anyway to turn the Gnome composite manager off so I can get Xcompmgr on?



If interested this is what I did:

I added the following to the Xorg file under "Device"

Option "NoLogo" "1"
Option "NoBandwidthTest" "1"
Option "NoPowerConnectorCheck" "1"
Option "RenderAccel" "1"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "1"

and I moved

"Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection"

down to the bottom
