xorg lockups

I've been having this issue since I first installed Linux on my desktop over a year ago. It happens frequently, but randomly, so it's hard to troubleshoot.

Typical sequence of events:

- I'll "startx" after rebooting and everything will be normal
- I'll exit X back to the command line, still normal
- After coming back to the computer after leaving it running for some time it will almost always lock up when I try to "startx"
- I usually need to reboot several times (close to 10) before I will be able to "startx" successfully again
- Once I can successfully launch the X server I can usually shut it down and restart it several times without issue
- disabling graphics acceleration *always* allows me to startx successfully

I don't know a lot about graphics hardware, so I've been taking shots in the dark here. I'm hoping it's incorrect configuration.

I've tried setting the permission options for DRI, removing 24 bit colour depth (I read my card didn't support it), and specifying videoram. Not sure if I did all that correctly though. The DRI and colour depth seemed to help, until I left the computer for a while. The error I get (log and xorg.conf posted below) makes me suspect there is a memory issue.

I'm running Debian Squeeze/Sid and had this issue with Lenny as well (when it was testing).

Any ideas?

It appears you have an Intel 82845G/GL graphics adapter.

I suggest you get the latest xf86-video-intel package ... and upgrade your xorg-server package.

I am surprised to see all those video drivers.. is that normal? I certainly didn't install them on purpose.. could they be interfering with each other?

Thanks.. let me know if you need something else.

The xorg-server will only load the required driver ... in your case the intel driver.

Have you tried to update those two ?

Yes.. I update fairly regularly.. and according to dpkg -l and the Debian repository, my intel driver is up to date, and xserver-xorg is up to date for testing. There is a newer version in unstable.. I can try that, but I don't think it'll help.

I think the xorg-server-intel is at v2.8.0-2 ...

You should get this version as there have been a number of fixes to the Intel driver.

Well look at that.. I must have been looking at the wrong thing.

Updated the intel driver to 2.8.0-2 and that seems to have helped. We'll see what happens after it's been running for a while.

Thanks.

Alright, no dice. Logged out and left it running overnight, tried starting X this morning, and now it's worse. My monitor said "no input", then went to sleep. Ctrl-Alt-backspace/function keys did nothing. I had to hard boot it.

xorg.conf is as above, except I turned graphics acceleration back on. Xorg.0.log is pasted below.

Code:
X.Org X Server 1.6.3
Release Date: 2009-7-31
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.30.4-dsa-ia32 i686 Debian
