xorg configuration to eliminate scan line artifacts while using TV-out

I am setting up a machine with TV video output only to run mythtv. Everything works however I get annoying light and dark bands that slowly move up the screen from bottom to top. They are not noticable when watching TV but are noticable when displaying static images.

The video card is a geforce 4 using the nvidia drivers.
horizontal sync is 30-50
vertical sync is 60
the desktop runs at 800x600@16
TV output is SVIDEO

Are there any way to adjust the sync values or generate modelines that will reduce or eliminate the artifacts?
