Its usually best to make a backup of config files before tinkering with them. If you still remember what you changed, then just edit the file and correct your mistakes. If this is not possible, run "xorgconfig" to reconfigure X from scratch.

You can use xorgsetup which tries to guess your hardware and write the appropriate configuration.

Check in your /etc/X11 directory. depending on what you used to edit the file their is probably a backup in there somewhere.

Assuming you are using Slackware (as it says in your user info):

If you were previously using the default xorg.conf from installing Slackware, you should be able to get that from an X package.

I didn't immediately find a way to reinstall a single file with installpkg. Maybe you could find more help in the Slackware forum here.

Or, since a Slack package is just a .tgz file, maybe you can extract that, and get the original copy of xorg.conf that way.

The real lesson is to make backups

pkgconfig creates the xorg.conf file. It is just copied from an existing file. The code of the pkgconfig doinst.sh install script:

Code:
# Use framebuffer by default if no xorg.conf is found:
if [ ! -r etc/X11/xorg.conf -a -r etc/X11/xorg.conf-vesa ]; then
  cp -a etc/X11/xorg.conf-vesa etc/X11/xorg.conf
fi
So if you still have the unchanged /etc/X11/xorg.conf-vesa you have the initial xorg.conf file.
