Question xorg.conf messup with screen

I installed the latest Kubuntu, and all went well, but my default resolution was one combination below what my max is, which is also what I prefer: 1280x1024. I got into Display in the Peripheral's group to edit the res, but 1280x1024 didn't show for some reason, despite the fact that my hardware can support it at 32bpp.

So I editted the xorg.conf file (after installing successfully the NVIDIA Linux drivers) and inserted the new res, restarted X and everything went to crap. I wasn't able to boot into X and so had to remove xorg.conf and restart X with default parameters, I tried using xorgconfig to rewrite a new one, but that gave me more problems.

I'm thinking of just reinstalling kubuntu, inserting the new res, and then installing the NVIDIA drivers.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
