Xorg.conf for Ubuntu 7.10 amd64
 

Hi all,

Like many Linux users, I downloaded Ubuntu 7.10 amd64 this morning. I can't get past the xorg.conf issues. I can't even ctrl-alt-f1 to fix anything. The screen just blinks at me. I have a Viewsonic E90f monitor and do no know the proper adjustments to make in xorg.conf to fix it.

Can anyone tell me how to get into the xorg.conf file and what the settings would be for this monitor. Oh, I also have a Geforce 7600 Nvidia graphics card. Re: I can't ctrl-alt-f1 or ctrl-alt-backspace into terminal.

We need more details of the problem.
Do you get to a login prompt or are you booting straight into X?
Are there any errors on the screen when you ctl-alt-backspace/F1?
Is this a fresh install or an upgrade?

Do an internet search for your monitor specs and find out what the vertical and horizontal refresh rates are, and what the maximum resolution is.

I'm booting straight into to X as this is a fresh install. When I ctrl-alt-backspace/F1, the screen remains indecipherable; very thin green and white verticle and horizontal lines. I can't even get to a login prompt in terminal because I can't ctrl-alt-backspace/F1. Finding the specs is not as big of deal for me as just being able to at least get to a login prompt where I can then go to my xorg.conf file and do the necessary changes.


What should I do now?

Your best bet may be to boot up into rescue mode.

I assume you're using grub to boot (Ubuntu default), so here's how to boot into single user mode, which will bring you to a root console:

Reboot, at grub menu, press any key to stop the countdown (if you have one), highlight the ubuntu entry and press "e" no quotes. (e=edit)

Highlight the kernel line and press "e" again. Add the word "single" (no quotes) at the end of the line with a space between single and the last letter on the line. Press enter.

Press "b" without quotes (b=boot)

You should then be at a root console where you can edit xorg.conf

It hit me to just install from safe graphics mode and it worked! Then, I turned on Nvidia's accelerated graphics mode, restarted the system, and now my resolution problems are history! Oh, and by the way flash works with only 2 clicks! Yeah!
