xorg, can't enable direct rendering, logfile doesn't update Radeon 7000 AGP

I've been having a great deal of trouble, as it seems everyone has, with my ATI Radeon. It'a a Radeon 7000, and it uses AGP. I've been going through the DRI wiki trying to get it to work. I got to the end of the wiki. There it said that I had all my GL programs using the wrong libGL, thus I changed the libGL.so.1 link to the new mesa drivers I compiled. After I did that, I got no output when I set LIBGL_DEBUG to verbose. I've been looking through my logs to see what I could be doing wrong, and I just realized that my logfile for xorg says that it was created several days ago. I'm wondering if perhaps the logfile isn't being written to and I'm skipping a step because I think that it's doing something it's not.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
