Can you ctrl+alt+f1 (trough f6 usually) to get a command line, or is it completely frozen?
Boot into command line (use single user mode if needed) and read what it says in /var/log/Xorg.0.log - the last lines ought to tell what went wrong. Probably a configuration error, and if it is, just modify xorg.conf to get over it. The driver to use with nvidia cards (prior to installing the nvidia proprietary driver, at least) is called 'nv' I think...and if all else fails, driver called "vesa" should get you X running at least. Ugly, but working, if it just is a driver issue. If not, the logfile ought to tell that too...
