xorg and getting fluxbox to run for the first time

After installing xorg and fluxbox, and configuring the xorg.conf file, I am trying to get into fluxbox. Right now my xorg.conf tells x to use xdm and XSESSION is set to fluxbox. When I run startx (as root), X runs momentarily, then cuts back to the terminal. X seems to work fine, I can run twm alright, looks like it's either a user/permissions thing, or that I haven't set up something in fluxbox properly.

I get this error when I am tossed back to the terminal:
Code:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/local/, removing from list!
/usr/bin/startfluxbox:line 4: /root/.fluxbox/startup: Permission denied
/usr/bin/startfluxbox:line 4: /root/.fluxbox/startup: Success
/usr/bin/startfluxbox:line 4: /root/.fluxbox/startup: Permission denied
/usr/bin/startfluxbox:line 4: /root/.fluxbox/startup: Success

waiting for X server to shut down
I am running gentoo on an athlon 950 with the 2.6.10 kernel. I will gladly post config files or any other output peolpe would like to see.

There's a couple of ways of doing it - some of them:

To use startx:

(First put exec startfluxbox into your ~/.xinitrc file - ie)

$ echo "exec startfluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc

and then use:

$ startx

from then on as an ordinary user after logging in on the command line.

To use xdm:

Edit your /etc/rc.conf file and set like:

DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"
XSESSION="fluxbox"

and also add xdm to the default run-level ie - su to root then:

# rc-update add xdm default

This way brings you to the graphical login screen on boot-up - (ie no need to use startx)
