xmms working in KDE - but not in GNOME

I decided to use GNOME for a while to test it out, but I'm having difficulties getting xmms to play mp3s. In KDE it all worked fine, but with GNOME I get:

mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding
arts_init error: can't connect to aRts soundserver

No idea what that means. I can play sounds fine with mplayer, cd-audio works as well. Only xmms seem to behave odd... Anyone know what's wrong?
