XMMS w/Red Hat 8.0

I am new to Linux-- I moved from Mandrake to Red Hat, and previously I could play PLS and streaming Mp3's, but cannot by detault with Rh8

I searched and found licencing problems with Mp3 and Rh8, but got a new RPM from this place:

http://www.gurulabs.com/downloads.html

I used the package mananger to remove the version that came with the OS, and installed this version (I didn't check to see if there were any differences, as I am new to Linux)

Anyway, after I did that, the new one had the Mp3 support I wanted. When I tried to play streaming or Mp3 files on my disk-- I got a message from XMMS that said the file could not be played because I either didnt have the right plugin selected, something was using the soundcard, or the soundcard was not configured.

I knew the soundcard was working because I setup system event sounds, and I had the plugin because I just installed it.

It turned out that the system sounds tied up the sound card. I disabled them all, and waiting for about a minute, and bingo-- shoutcast worked again!

The fact that this happens bugs me a bit, but at least I got it to work.

I wanted to post this in case it helps someone else.

Sounds like you're using a sound server that only allows one connection (like ESD, I believe RH uses it by default). To fix that you'll need to switch to another that allows multiple connections (I believe Artsd does).

Thumbs up XMMS problem

Thanks for the tip - I've been going nuts trying to get XMMS to work with Shoutcast's playlists in RH 8.0.

AHH thank you null that explains why those annoying sounds don't work in AIM (Instant messenger) while i'm playing mp3's !
I'm gonna look into Artsd, it is silly to use a sound server that allows only one connection is it not?
Thx
