XMMS stealing soundcard
I have a RH8.0 Gateway 2000 with an Ensoniq AudioPCI card. The problem I keep having in XMMS is that sometimes (but not always) when it stops one song and starts another it doesn't release the sound port properly for some reason (or perhaps something else starts using it, I don't know which applications I should check for), and stops playing with the error message that the port is already in use. I have disabled the KDE sounds and set the wait between songs to three seconds. But because I plan on using this computer to play MP3s off of another network drive I really want it to work properly, without me having to hit the OK button and then the Play button every ten or fifteen minutes.
Also: The joystick plugin for XMMS doesn't seem to recognize my joystick. It's an extremely "standard" 2 button 2 axis joystick, but I'd like to also use a (2 axis, 6 button) gamepad for it. How do I configure this properly? |
which sound output are you using? if you're under KDE then XMMS should have an arts output plugin, which can connect to the KDE sound server and play through there fine. also try using esd as well.

esd is very good. typically linux sound drivers allow for one program to have access to the sound card at any one time. esd opens the sound card and lets multiple access to the sound card. works pretty well too.

very good?
"esound is junk. The only thing esd has is a good client API for going boing at approximately the right time. Anything else is beyond it." - Alan Cox can't argue with a demi-god :D |
The aRrts driver works much better! Thanks. I had been alternating between using the eSound driver and using the OSS driver, but they both had such problems. The aRts driver does not, and I'm sorta wondering why I hadn't tried it out before now.
Thanks! Now about the Joystick. Is there anything I need to know about configuring the JS? The plugin doesn't seen to show any of the buttons on it, so I'm not sure if it recognizes it's existence. |
"can't argue with a demi-god "
well that's very true, but until it gives me problems... its staying. |
