I actually just recompiled XMMS source and I was up and ready in about 5 minutes.

Actually I'm just using RedHat 8 because I couldn't be bothered to get 9. I had to recompile some of the packages like Apache and XMMS.

i'm having a similar but different issue with my xmms.

I've installed the MP3 patch (i don't get the leagal error message any more) xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm. I've got the mpeg123 player plug in on my available list and it's enabled.

i can get it to play CDs but when I try to play MP3 or WAV files, no joy...

They don't actually play (it doesn't advance when i hit the play button). but curiously, if i drag the scroll bar (fast forward) I can see the visualization graphs for that instant. So it looks like the files are being decoded, but xmms doesn't want to play them.

separate note: my sound card doesn't want to auto initialise -- i have to try and detect it whenever I want to get sound working on my RH9. How do i initialize this?

thanks from the newest of newbies.

I am new to linux, installed RH 9.0 along with Windows Xp. When a music cd is inserted, the default player starts playing, but no sounds comes out. The sound card is working fine. I tried to play a .wav file using XMMS and it worked well, when I chnaged the .wav extension to .cda, XMMS was playing the song but again there was no sound. Can some one suggest how I may overcome this trouble?.

Hey Chubbysurfer....

the problem is that XMMS is writing wav files to your hdd, not outputting to your sound card. assuming your sound drivers are installed properly.....

open XMMS

hit control+p

change the sound output from "Disk Writer Plugin" to one of the others.

Enjoy

I checked the preferences in xmms. Sound output is not to the disk. The trouble was that when the .wav files are run using xmms, the sound comes out fine, however for .cda files the player does play but the sound wasn't coming. Oggenc does compress .cda files. The system is able to recognise .cda files as audio files. Please suggest a fix.

Hey RAM --

Had the same problem, but Kahless inspired me to dink around with my Preferences. Try <Ctrl+p> Audio I/O Plugin/Input Plugins/CD Audio Player 1.2.7; click the configure button; select Digital Audio Extraction.

Mine had been on Analog -- now: maximum joy!

Best Regards!
