xmms problems
 

when i play mp3s with xmms, i get a lot of "popping" and "skips" especially when i switch workspaces or if im opening a new program. why is that? can this be fixed?

Audio plugin is setup incorrectly, try to switch to another plugin through XMMS preferences menu

a while back on mandrake i had that problem, but now im using redhat and i cant get XMMS to play at all...

maybe you guys know what to do, every time i click Play it prompts me to select a file, but when i do it doesnt play it OR add it to the playlist (they are MP3 files) i looked in plugins and saw no MP3 one, maybe that's it...

hopefully im missing something simple and you guys can clue me in, im running RH8


edit: well ok... i just read http://www.xmms.org/ and it seems that RH8 didnt include mpg123 support for patent reasons, on to the next problem :)

for the skipping and popping in the preferences there's a setting to bump up the priority of xmms.. that may help..


Redhat 8.0 doesn't play mp3s out of box. You have to download the plugin and install. Check out the xmms homepage they talk about it on the front page..

i had a similar problem too...try by going into Control Panel? (can't remember what its called in Linux...Control Center?) and goto the sound option and stop Artsd from loading at KDE startup...that seemed to sort of fix mine...but now i have a slight crackle out the left hand side of the speakers...tell me if you get the same thing...
also, if xmms comes up saying that it can't play because of wrong plugin, or something may be blocking the device....try opening an xterm, and infront of xmms put 'artsdsp xmms'...that fixed that one for me too :)

I followed the instructions I found here: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=1890. This had me install apt get and download MP3 support for XMMS. Did this, and it seemed to work OK. But, when I try to play MP3's (either from a Samba share on a Windows server, or locally), XMMS crashes. My sound card is C-Media (onboard the Soyo Dragon Mobo). Is this an issue w. MP3 support under XMMS/RH8, or is it a sound driver issue? Sound does work within OS, but not within Tuxracer (haven't tested elsewhere, need to try w. a CD).

So, in a nutshell, I am also having the same/similar issue as others. Suggestions??

Use the arts output plugin, then you don't need artsdsp. Or wait 30 sec after some KDE application played the last sound, then the soundserver will free the device again.

I don't think it is a sound issue, I think it is an issue with RedHat removing MP3 support from xmms.

I had an install of RedHat 8 that just refused to play MP3's even after installinhg the MP3 plugin.

Also erounious errors about not supporting files over the network. I couldn't play stream an yvideo files or music files over the network.

An upgrade on top of 7.3 cured all my problems. All the goodies from 7.3 remain there after the upgrade, so everything worked. ;)
