xmms output problem

Hi there, I'm having some problem with xmms.

What I want to do is to make xmms output to a file (named pipe) that I have created.

I thought this would be simple enough and was told all I needed to do was to go to the preferences/audio IO plugins/output plugin tab and change the OSS output driver to my named pipe.

I did this and changed it. When I then play some music xmms still plays the music and does not seem to be outputting to my named pipe.

What am I doing wrong?

Could be xmms outputting to my named pipe and my sound device as well?

Do I maybe need to tell it to use the OSS plugin somewhere?

Also could you tell me the differences between OSS, ALSA and aRts, I'm a bit of a newbie !!

If you know of another good media player that will allow you to change the output stream to a file of your choice please could you let me know.

Thanks for your time.

First of all thanks for the link was extremely useful, understand OSS, ALSA etc .. a lot better now!!

I couldn't seem to be able to download the diskWriter plugin anywhere but I'm not sure its what i'm looking for anyway. I want to be able to send whatever xmms is sending to the driver to my named pipe. I then want to be able to send that data across a network then give it to the driver so that it plays it striaght away. I think diskWriter converts what is being sent from xmms into a wav file which is not what I want as when I then send that to the driver it would not work.

Why when I change the OSS output plugin to my named pipe does it not work? Any ideas?

Thanks again for your time.
