XMMS opening pls files from browser

I have seen this question asked a few times, but have yet to see an answer...

I'm trying to listen to shoutcast streams, but when I click on the button to start the stream, XMMS opens to the "Load File" dialog. If I save the pls file and run it from my computer, it works fine. What should I be doing differently? I'm using Opera 7.23, and Mandrake 9.2 (KDE).

Thanks.

Hey HCLogo,

If you're running KDE 3.2, save the file to the HDD and navigate to it in Konq. Right click and choose properties. Then click on the little spanner on the "General" tab. Make sure that XMMS is listed the "Application Preference order" list, and use the "Move Up" button to make sure it's at the top of the list. This will make it the "#1 option" to open this type of file.

It's been a little while since I've used KDE 3.1.x, but from memory you can only set file associations through the KDE Control Centre. It should be under Components-->File Associations. Then search for "pls" in the "Find file name pattern" field. Again make sure XMMS is listed as the "#1 app" in the "Application Prefernce Order" box.

Hope that helps,
Tim

I already checked my system settings, and it works fine if I run the pls file locally, so I'm positive thats not the problem. I'm pretty sure the problem lies within my browser (Opera 7.23), as it doesn't seem to be feeding the file to xmms properly.

Hi, this problem arises because, at the moment, Linux mp3 players don't know how to handle .pls files. Fortunately, .pls files are text files which makes them easy to parse. A simple bash script and adding a line to your .mailcap file should do the trick. One example of the sort of script you should use is here:

Hope that helps!
