xmms, kaffeine and mplayer won't share

xmms, kaffeine and mplayer are all setup to use alsa, but for some reason do not allow the sharing of the sound card. In Control Centre->Sound System->Test Sound does share with noatun and the terminal system bell, but not with x,k or m.

I am running fedora 3 and using kde 3.2. I have switching everything to arts and oss but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

sorry, i should have said "...do not allow the sharing of the sound card with other apps or each other"

Because of the nature of ALSA you cannot have apps simoultaniously using the card. There is a way to have a special mixing program..... not sure though.

I don't agree, alsa enables you to play sound from various sources and share the sound card at the same time. I have just tested this by playing an audio file with xmms and playing a video at the same time using xine and I can hear sound from both. I am using kernel 2.6.x with alsa compiled into the kernel.
