umm, ok, im trying to play a MP3 file with XMMS for the first time, and it show me that window:

Can't open audio
please check that:
1. you have correct output plugin selected
2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard (how can i check that?)
3. Your soundcard is configured properly

My soundcard works, because i can play Music CD's, but not MP3 files from xmms.
I have SuSE 8.2... can u help me ?

Well, as far as I know, Suse does not have a plugin issue for playing mp3's as Redhat does. So, the error is what it says . Most likely, you have some other program blocking the sound card. If your sound card is improperly configured, some desktop sounds (as Gnome or KDE sounds) may block the mp3's from playing. You could try:

1 - A command line mp3 player as mplayer or mpg123 and see what happens or

2 - Disable to sounds from either KDE or Gnome and try to play again the mp3's

AFAIK The xmms player no longer comes with mp3 support as standard due to licensing issues. I installed the plugin from an RPM using an RPM search website... which unfortunately I don't have the URL for, it's bookmarked at home. I'm sure if you search for something along the lines of "xmms mp3 plugin rpm" you'll probably find what you need.

emmm... ok, i installed mp3blaster (a command line mp3 player) and in says: "failed to open sound device". and i installed "Zinf" too - a graphical audio player - and it says "audio device is busy".
i dont know what can i do...
if anyone knows please help...

ok, good news, i deleted the sound card configuration from YaST2 and added it again, and now it works, but every time i reboot the computer i need to do it again. i think that something make the soundcard "stuck" - some proccess uses it and it stuck. like the 'Test' area in the sound configuration - i push the 'Test' button and it start to make sound, then it repeat itself again and again and again until i delete the soundcard from the configuration.
any idea what i can do?

great , nice to have xmms playing, i use it all the time. suse 8.2 comes with the xmms player in very workable conditon, unlike red hat 9, score a big plus for suse 8.2.i have found most of the linux systems have xmms player installed, red hat is one of the lone dogs here

Strange problem you've got up there GloVe. I have had the very same problem with an older machine of mine because it had an inbuilt sound card. As I could never get it to work as it should, I gave up and bought the cheapest sound card I could find, a Zoltrix. Yet, 100% Linux compatible and pretty good . I think it was like 15 American dollars. Are you using an inbuilt sound card?

I don't know if anyone is still viewing this topic, but I just had a similar problem and remembered my remedy for it.

Apparently, on reboot (which has been altogether too often for me -- Linux has not yet proven to be as stable as it is fabled to be), my system automatically resets the permissions on the /dev/dsp device to something unusable. The remedy is to go into a terminal, become root and type "chmod 666 /dev/dsp" which allows any user (and any program?) to use the sound device. Before I do this, XMMS, xine, Realplayer, etc. are unable to open the device; after I do this, everything works fine. I'm not sure how wise it is to give permission to everyone, but it does the trick, anyway.

I am having a similar problem with xmms. My motherboard is a Gigabyte with embedded sound. During the install of redhat 9 the sound card works properly (in the sound card test anyway). I just happend to have a vorgg orbis (sp?) file on my machine. When I try to play it, it plays the first 1/2 second (just enough to see the display move) and then stops. No error message, nada. If I try to do anything else with xmms, it will lock up (kinda like a windows program...). I run have to run xkill to get it to go away. After that, xmms won't even come up again until I completely reboot the machine. This also happens when I install the mp3 plugin and try to play an mp3 file. I am going to try the "fix" that Jaiwen suggested and also try disabling the embedded sound card and installing a generic one. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

i have found that whenever i have these problems, it has been because some other program is hogging the sound system
the sound card can only handle one sound at at time, so if u want to use more than one sound app at once, u need to get esd installed

the app that usually blocked my sound was the desktop environment itself, normally kde does a good job of complicating things
to solve the problem and u are using kde, go to the conrol panel, go to sound and then sound system and turn of the sound system from loading at start (aRts i believe it is called)

if that still does not work, try getting sound to work in gnome, i've always had better success in gnome and was then able to work things out later in kde
