Xmms > Freezing with OSS, no sound with Alsa

Hi
I have a problem with xmms / beep-media-player. When I try to play mp3s with the OSS output plugin, BMP freezes. With the Alsa plugin, it does play the song but I can't hear anything, although the sound is working with others apps. It occurs when launching BMP as root, as well as a normal user. And it's not a Mandrake-related problem, since I'm using Ubuntu.
Thanks a lot for your help
