xmms, firefox. display problems, random freezing

I'm running Debian/Sarge with a custom kernel.

Since I tried out diplaying local X11 apps on my mac (which worked fine, except for some screwed colors), some applications behave strangely.

Firefox, e.g. freezes sometimes (not reproducable, but for sure, when downloading a file), xmms doesn't draw menus or buttons only appear after blindly clicking on a form (see screenshot below). I haven't found other programs to show abnormal behaviour, but this is annoying enough.

Can anybody give me any directions where the source of this might be located? Because I'm totally clueless right now, about where to start my search :/

switching off X11 fowarding in /etc/ssh/sshd_conf seems to have fixed the problem, but still - the questions remains: wtf?
