xmms and mp3's or cd's

I am running fedora core 4 and i have installed xmms as a mp3 player. I am haveing some problems getting it to work properly. first...when i tried to play an mp3 it gave me a red hat error saying that due to piracy or something it will not support mp3? im a little confused on that one. second i tried to put a cd in and it shows that it is playing but nothing is coming out of the speakers. I have tried other things like the soundcard detector and some other websites and it does work with them. DO i have to point xmms at the soundcard or something? I am going to continue to poke around but any help is appreciated. Thanks.
