xmms alternatives

im looking to try a new mp3 player, just to play the field. im particularly looking for something with a media library like music match has. i dont want any mmjb for linux recommendations, it uses wine and it's very slow. id like a linux native app. what do you guys/gurus use? oh... and ladies also.

If you're looking for an alternative other than xmms you might try "MusicMatch Jukebox".

Personally I use xmms. It works great for me.

Well I use mp3blaster, it's console, but not command line. It uses ncurses to display a nice command gui. Very fast, and good. There is also freeamp which, from it's name I deduce (pretty good of me ;) ) is a winamp clone. If you are truly a bad dude, you could give mpg123 a try.

Cool

I'm tired of need to use the mouse to hear my mp3s, so i switched to console based players.

Currently i'm using cplay, "a curses front end for various audio players"
fast, logical key mappings (at least to me), can read-write playlist, a pleasure to use,
only missing the ability to read id3 tags:

Another good console player is playmp3list, can display id3 tags but cannot read-write playlists
(at least at the time i use it).

Just to let you know, FreeAmp has now changed names (don't ask why) and is now called Zinf (Zinf Is Not [b]F]/b]reeamp). Oh, and I read somewhere (could probably find it on Goggle) about an 'app' that lets you play music on a remote machine, by way of an 'internet interface' (php based browser menu system, to you and I). Just thought I'd drop that in aswell.

now winamp3 is available for linux
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/...amp-0.a1-1.tgz
no need of any other.

Does anyone know whether the plugins for WA3 will work regardless of which OS WA3 is running on? That'd be great if it did!

Goatdemon 08-18-2002 08:02 PM

does winamp3 use wine?

Thymox 08-18-2002 08:14 PM

AFAIK, Nope. I tried Linux-WA3b a while ago and it worked (sort of) without anything to do with Wine on the machine. However, I found that the Win-WA3b ran much better (under Wine) than the Linux-WA3b version did (at the time).

mavness 08-19-2002 12:17 AM

i downloaded and ran winamp3 but my screen flashes a black box on it, then unloads the program with no errors....any ideas?

MasterC 08-19-2002 12:55 AM

How did you load it? And how did you install it? Is it the winbloze version and you are using wine, or is it the Linux version?

mavness 08-19-2002 09:30 AM

the linux version..it loads 3 black boxes, which is the winamp windows, i know because ive used it in windows...but then they close and it goes to the command propmpt...

Thymox 08-19-2002 01:39 PM

Personally, I'd prefer it if a plug-in for XMMS was written so that you could use WA plugins. You can already use (most) WA skins, plugins would just be the icing on the cake!

fool_inteligent 08-19-2002 03:44 PM

you can run the versions of winamp like 2.78 on linux with wine but not winamp 3.
the link i have posted is the link of linux version not windows.
