OO can open and save .xls (the old MS Office spreadsheet), but not .xlsx.
MS fail at life. I swear the only reason they invented these new formats is to screw OO.

wait, wait, wait...
i have to do it all in linux shell, no way i can open file on OpenOffice, and then save it in some format.
the point is that i have to convert XLS file to XML. for that i used xmllint ( http://xmlsoft.org/xmllint.html). great tool.
but now, i have to be able to do the same with XLSX files. my idea was to convert XLSX to XLS, and then to continue by using xmllint. that's why i asked about whole thing. so, no way i can use OO directly, then open and save as... file.

Have you tried using MS Excel 2007 itself. You can always do a Save As .xls after opening the .xlsx file in it.
