xkbset not supported?

I can no longer use 'xkbset mousekeys' on my Sony Vaio Z505sx w/ Debian testing - kernel 2.4.24 (video is a NeoMagic 256AV). I'm not sure when it stopped working, but I know it worked at some point. When I run 'xkbset mousekeys' or even 'xkbset q' all I get is "XKB not supported for display :0.0" Is this a XF86Config problem? Help!
