xinetd dead

Hi everyone,
Why do I get a message "xinetd dead but pid file exists". Xinetd used to work. I tried rebooting the system and receive the same error. I looked in /var/log/messages and find the erros "missing service keyword line 1", "unexpected signal 11". Also I read something about removing existing PID files, how do I do that?

Thanks
Rob

PID file will be /var/lock/xinetd ; just delete it.

Did you edit the xinetd files by hand at some point? these live at /etc/xinetd.d/*

Thanks for the help. I found that the problem was when I would enabale a service to start by editing the file then disable it a copy was made. when i deleted the copies things started working again.

more detail please.

can you explain a little bit more? what and where are the copies?

I can not restart it, and reboot does not work either. It is bad, since it is my printing server.

Thank!!
