xine won't play video files

recently my system has refused to play the video part of all avi files. the sound plays and they work fine in mplayer. I have played all the files many times before. I do not remember exactly when the problems started, but not very long ago.

I tried to run xine <filename> --verbose and the output indicates that the codecs for divX and xvid are missing. I have tried to remove and reinstall the packages without success.

my system:
amd64 3700+
1,5 GiB ram
mandriva 2006, 64bit

I have noticed that Mandriva has some "issues" with where it puts the codecs, and where applications expect to find them.

All my problems with codecs went away when I made a symlink between /usr/lib/win32 (which did exist) and /usr/lib/codecs (which did not exist) like this:

ln -s /usr/lib/win32 /usr/lib/codecs
