I don't think there is an open-source codec of wmv3 out yet. Sorry.

Where did you get the win32 codecs and on what distro did you install them?

WMV works fine for me using the same codecs. The only problem I sometimes have is with asx files. The codecs from the plf repo used to give me the same problems you are currently experiencing.

where did you install the codecs to? Xine looks for codecs in a different place then MPlayer does. If the codecs are in /usr/lib/codecs, create a link to it called win32:
Code:

ln -s /usr/lib/codecs /usr/lib/win32
If still does not work, run xine from the command line and copy and paste the error.

hi ,
i created the link discribed above ,
i got no error in the shell , and it still does not show any picture , just sound ,
thanks ,
m-s,

what did it say when you ran xine in the terminal and tried to play the file? It will usually say what the problem is when it fails to play a particular codec.

it does show error message ( not on the shell ) ,
the error is :
Quote:

The stream'There is no mrl.' use an unsupported codec:
Video Codec:Windows Media Video 9(WMV3)
start playback anyway?
if choosing yes , it start only voice ..!

and if we already talking about codecs , i am not able to get my mplayer run .rm files ?? i tried to create directory as described in the documentation of the mplayer ,

thank you very much indeed,
m-s,

All of the video types you are describing are supported by Mplayer with their "all-codec" package. Where exactly did you install the codecs too? I don't remember exactly but I think it asks you to put them in /usr/local/lib/codecs/ ?? Make sure you create the proper links to the directory that actually contains the codecs. The error your getting is basically a "I can't find the codecs" error. For safe measure, you should have 3 links and 1 directory that actually contains the data.

/usr/lib/codecs
/usr/lib/win32
/usr/local/lib/codecs
/usr/local/lib/win32

One of those should have all of the codecs, the other 3 should be links pointing to the 1.

replay,

well ,
i have the codecs in /usr/lib/codecs ,
and i just created the links you specified and that didn't help , the point is that after installing the codecs in /usr/lib/codecs and modifing the config file in the .xine folder i could get xine to play .rm and rm streaming but although the .dll codecs contained in the all*** package xine play some wmv files but not the wmv3 niether the .avi files ( which i think is related some how to the wmv ) ,

and about the mplayer , i put the codecs in the folder specified in the documentation and in the README file (i don't remember what it was ), but it didn't play any of these files and niether .rm files ...!

ps , once i get xine to play .rm file both totem and kaffaine start to play it too but tring to play wmv3 using them i get the same problem ,

thanks alot ,
m-s ,

do you have a 64-bit computer? as far as i know, the windows codecs only work on a 32-bit machine.

mohama 04-28-2006 07:45 PM

since i use ibm ( intel centrino ) i quess it's a 32-bit machine , which by the way i am thinking of change it with AMD 64 bit cpu ... :-)

m-s,

MPlayer must be reconfigured/compiled when new codecs are installed, but I'm not sure why xine refuses to read them. Try getting MPlayer to work with the codecs you have, it gives more verbose error messages about what the problem is with the codec it's trying to use. Once you figure it out, apply that knowledge to xine.

thank you very much indeed ,
