Unhappy xine-remote and lineakd

Hi folks. I'm trying to set up the media buttons on my Vaio laptop to control xine, via lineakd and xine-remote.

For example, when I press the play button, lineakd spits out "xine-remote -c play"

The problem I'm running into is that the play button is labeled as play/pause, and I'd like it to function in that manner. I figured I could write a script to detect the current play state using "xine-remote -c 'get speed'" and then spit out the appropriate command, but xine-remote isn't returning any output from that command.

Am I missing something? And if not, can anyone recommend an alternate method?
