Yes .. unfortunately Xine cannot (to my knowledge) play DVD's. This has something to do with copyrights & legal wrangles as it is free software.

Only windows players - which cost - have the authority to run de-encryption algorithms to play your regular DVD movie.

Visit the Xine website for more info on this...

Xine works I was wrong

Hi , in my last post i wrote that xine would not work to playback dvd. I was wrong about this.

you can make xine work with full dvd menu support etc but you will need to download a few files to do this.

I got my xine to work (really nicely!!) by following the instructions at:

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

which is a onestop shop with everything you will need. But be aware, it may be illegal to use xine in some countries, so you should check the law!

cheers

many distros come with broken dvd reading (because like said before, you need to pay to legally read dvds)

but linux can use lbdvdcss, which is able to bypass the encryption and read the dvd like a block device

http://developers.videolan.org/libdvdcss/

download from there, and then compile it
