Xine installation
I just installed Slack (my first distro) a few days ago, and I'm still learning how to install programs. I downloaded Xine and followed the instructions. I compiled and installed it, but now what? I can't find the program anywhere in the menus. How can I start the program?

just run it from a console. or learn how to put things in whatever menus you have. alternatively get a decent video player, like mplayer.
|
When I type in xine from a console, it tells me command not found. I will try mplayer too, but not until I can figure out how to install this one correctly ;).
|
Type whereis xine and see what pops up.

It's in /usr/local/lib/xine along with mplayer. I installed mplayer and was able to add it to my menu with kappfinder, but mplayer doesn't work either. It tries to load forever and then quits :(

See if it reports an error maybe in /var/log/messages

Don't feel too bad mplayer doen't work for me right now either - must have installed the f$%#@$ thing about 20 times before with no problems whatsoever and now it tells me that I don't have X11 installed.
When you do ./configure check if it finds your x11-headers and libs and X11. It doesn't at my box. As for xine just type xine in a terminal and se what pops up.If nothing pops up try to cd to /usr/local/lib/xine and try it in the directory. |
