xine freezes when playing .avi subtitles!

Hey people! I am trying to use xine to play a video, and this video has subtitles. Xine plays the video ok, but always when I try to load the subtitle (.srt file), it freezes. On Windows (bsplayer) the subtitle works perfectly, so it is not a problem with the file. I don't see any erorr message when I try to run it from the console, it just freezes and I need to xkill. Is there anything I can do? Thanks!

The chicken solution would be to use another player.
I use mplayer for everything that moves.
