Xine and DVD

I have installed Xine on my SuSE 9.1 Per system only to find it does not play DVD! I get the reason behind this, but when trudging thru the web looking for DVD players I read Xine was the tool for the job.

I now find out that there is no linux DVD support?

Is this true, is there no plugin or whatever to get them to work?

you need to get libdvdcss. you could try out http://freshrpms.net and see if those rpms will work for you. or just get the source tarball and compile it. http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/

Mmm too complicated as I don't know how to do what you say

That is alas what puts a lot of people off linux as to try to get things to work you need to trawl the web for fixes etc which usually require in depth knowledge of the internal workings of linux

I have sorted a lot of things out on my install but there are lots I just don't understand.

Mmm confused!

So I do a search for dvd plugin and find this url http://davis.lbl.gov/Manuals/XINE/howto-5.html

Question is how do I know if libdvdcss or libdvdread are installed on my system?

Brain starting to hurt now

Oh I get it... megaspaz is saying that the dvd that you are trying to watch uses css which is not supported by xine, so you should get the library. Didn't know about this until I tried to play a particular dvd.

But it's due to the uncertain legal situation. Actually my dvd player (hardware) can't play these either.... sad

what's so difficult?

1. find libdvdcss
2. install it.

what's the problem?
here's a place with rpms that are supposed to be portable across all distros. download it to your computer and then clicky, clicky on the file to install it.

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

not to difficult at all.

Megaspaz

Thanks for the info. I downloaded xine and the other RPMS on the site you suggested. Now i can watch DVD's, VCD's and Windoze media.

Thank you very much. Now my linux is complete. I have everything working the way i like it.

Megaspaz I will try this tonite, at work on Windoze at the mo

What I mean by "difficult" is that I searched for Xine and read loads of pages etc which gives lot of tech detail which basically confuses the shite outta me!

Now don't get me wrong I am a programmer by trade and don't give up as easy as joe bloggs but all the same it still requires knowing where to look and what to do.

So for example I have every faith your post will fix my problem tonight, but I spent all day yesterday hunting and installing stuff in an attempt to get it to work!

Ahhhhhh crap!

So according to the link;

get libxine1-(version)-xxxxxx.i586.rpm (yes I did)

get curl-7.10.3-1.i386.rpm (yes I did)

get xine-ui-(version)-xxxxxx.i586.rpm (yes I did)

Run this command; # rpm -U libxine1* xine-ui* curl* (yes I did, my version of curl is newer)

Install libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.network.i386.rpm (yes I did)

Guess what? "WARNING: this version of xine lacks support for playing dvd"

Holy s**t what gives??

Does this guff have anything to do with it?

I uninstalled all xine and associated software that came with the SuSE iso's.

Then followed the instructions given by Megaspaz. Now everything is working properly.

Someone had mentioned in another post that the xine that comes with SuSE is restricted and to uninstall it, before installing from the URL in megaspaz's message.

BTW, i installed all the packages with Yast and not the console.
