Question xine and arts

i got a question for the software gurus.
i have a turtlebeach montego sound card (aureal vortex 1) using the au8820 driver. when i installed before i had to do nothing, it just got my sound working. well this time i had to remove the rpm for alsa to get my xmms working and am using arts for xmms to work. here is the catch. i can use xmms as user but when i try using xine as user it opens and closes just like that. on the other had, though, i can su as root and run xine no problem. i am sorry but i am not at home and wasn't smart enough capture the output before i left for work but will do just that when i get home. i don't know much about using alsa or arts let alone what exactly they are. anyone got any suggestions??

Xine is up to version 1.0-beta9, you have version 0.9.13. You should update xine, there have been major improvements since your version was released.
