Ximian, OpenOffice 1.0

After installing the ximian rpm installation of OpenOffice 1.0, I attempted to run it from the programs menu as both root and user. Both attempts returned an error to the screen about 10-15 seconds later saying that an unrecoverable error had occurred and that my documents (not that i even got an application window :P) would be saved and could be recovered after a program restart. I tried running the program from the terminal window to no avail. The only message printed out there said: "Aborted". I checked the Ximian website and they told me to add a line to the script file that executes OpenOffice deleting the SESSION_MANAGER environment variable. This, however did nothing to fix the problem.

The other thing is that if I load OpenOffice with parameters accessing a file, a window showing the file appears on the screen. The window is scrollable and allows for such options as copy and paste between the document and other applications. It is even possible to type in the window. All the while though, the little msgbox I described earlier is on the screen. Once I click OK on that msgbox, it closes the document window as well.

Therefore, OpenOffice on my system is simply a file-viewer with an annoying error beep every time I load it. I'd like to be able to actually use the product since I am in LINUX all the time and despise switching to windows (the only way i deal is by using litestep).

Thanks for reading this and attempting to deduce a solution.

System Specs:
Redhat 7.3 (Kernel 2.4.18 (custom))
Ximian Desktop (latest stable)
OpenOffice (1.0 Ximian Release) [Tried 1.0.1 non-Ximian, same issue]
