ximian evolution not working to send mail (outlook and netscape are though)
 

I'm trying to get evolution to be my mail program. I can read mail with evolution but I can't send. So to make sure I wasn't crazy I set up Outlook (egads!) to send my mail using a remote SMTP server and that worked fine. So why not evolution?

I get an error that says:

"Could not connect to mail.blahblah.net (port 465) Resource is temporarily unavailable"

my ISP says that I must enable SMTP authentication. So under evolution's mail account setup screen I checked "server requires authentication" the two valid authentication types were NT Login and CRAM MD5. I tried both of them and get the same error (the one listed above) each time.

In version 1.45, the options in the drop-down for authentication type are:
PLAIN
NTLM/SPA
Kerberos 4
GSSAPI
DIGEST-MD5
CRAM-MD5
Login
POP before SMTP
Earthlink uses plain. There's also a button to "check for supported types" which queries the server for the needed auth method.

I used the "check for supported types" and it came back with two possibilities: CRAM MD5 and NT login. Like I said I tried them both and they both gave the same error.

I did get Outlook to work so I'm wondering if there's some windows thing (I think the SMTP server I'm using is an NT box but I"m not positive) that's being assumed.

Now I also got Netscape mail to work. but for some reason evolution still is not working. Anyone an evolution expert? ... no darwin jokes! ;)

pfunk - most likely, you do need authentication to get mail (from POP3) but you don't need authentication to send mail (via SMTP). Go to Tools / Settings, Edit your account, then under the Sending Mail tab, and uncheck the "server requires authentication" box. Yes, I realize your ISP apparently indicates that you need it, but I suggest giving it a try without it. I originally figured I needed authentication to send, but kept running into problems until I unchecked that box. As soon as I did, everything worked perfectly. Give it a try. If it doesn't work, well, then it's something else. -- J.W.
