XFree86 Xhost problem

I need to run a program under root while I am logged in as a regular user but every time I try (no matter what program it is) xhost errors. When I type xhost, or xhost +, I get 'icaruss:/usr/src # xhost
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"'

Anybody familiar with that problem? I looked up xhost on the internet, and it should reply with the server and so on and xhost + should give me access.

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specifiedlinux:/usr/local/firefox-installer # ./firefox-installer
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
