XFree86 errors are giving me nightmares
 

I seriously need help with this

I've already switched graphics cards... before it couldn't even find my nvidia geforce 4 with the "nv" module installed?!

Why does this have to be so complicated? I'm only a noob :confused:

Woa ... what are you trying to do? Is this on install?

In general - Xfree is replaced with Xorg in almost all major distros.

I did a base install or debian...

then I was trying to install xfree then kde?..

I didn't know about xorg...

You want xorg86.

Or you could do yourself a favour and do your complete install from something like Ubuntu (since you like debian). That way everything will just work and you can concentrate on learning how it works instead of some development cycle throwing you a curve like this.

Ubuntu looks like exactly what I need!

I currently have 2 pcs..

1: Old 1ghz AMD currently running Debian as a server... which I'm finally getting the hang of!

2: New 3ghz P4 currently running XP Pro/SP2... which is crashing frequently due to a combination of a cheap motherboard and high demanding 3d games.

The #2 is my workstation.. and I've been trying to migrate from Windows to X Windows for days now!..

Ubuntu is my next step... and it sounds like exactly what I need.

No sweat - try out the hoary live CD to make sure that it works on your system. Then go for the install.

The whole install and setup is super easy - though you may find yourself having to apt-get a few more things to get everything exactly the way you want. Since you've been hacking debian, you should be familiar with the procedure.
