XFree86-devel installer crash. Please help.

I'm trying to install ProTux, which uses a file in the Xfree86-devel package. WHen trying to install the said package I get the following error....

error processing //home/.... /Desktop/New Folder/xfree86-devel_4.3.99.902-41_i386.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/X11R6/bin/gccmakedep', which is also in package xutils
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
//home/... /Desktop/New Folder/xfree86-devel_4.3.99.902-41_i386.deb

My Linux distro is Mepis (debian) using the 2..6.10 kernel. I have attempted installation using Alien (rpm to deb) then using Package Manager to install the .deb Xfree binary.

As you can probably tell, I'm new to Linux, but I'm learning fast and loving it.

Any help you give... God will reward you.

Robert

Quick and dirty fix: (and I'm guessing here.)

remove the line /usr/X11R6/bin/gccmakedep
in /var/lib/dpkg/info/xutils.list

Can you not apt get for ProTux?

Thanks. Before I try the line removal option ou suggested, How do I use Apt-get for Protux? I'm new to LInux and, hey, I'm on training wheels.

By the way... I tried removing the line you suggested and it didn't work. When I ran package manager it gave me another line about a dependency. I tried removing that one, then another after that, and another... no go.

Hmmm ... is this Protux, the multitrack audio recorder/editor?
The project site recommend compiling from source, and do not give out binary packages. However, rpmfind lists three rpm's for 0.18.0 for Mandrake.

You could just remove all the dependency lines - or download the source tarball from http://www.nongnu.org/protux/index.html and follow the simple compile options. Since you seem to have the development packages installed, there shouldn't be trouble.
