Xfree86 and X.org

What is the difference between Xfree86's X server and X.org and why is Dropline Gnome using X.org over Xfree86?
Can both servers reside on one Linux system?
Are there any benefits to using X.org over Xfree86?

Thanks

afaik both can't coinside (i know this from using Gentoo), without some sort of heavy modification.

xorg is a response to xfree not being totally free; licensing issues. It's certainly not GNU anyway, so code contributed to the project I think could be locked up, and can't be used in your own projects <- need to check this.

xorg works at the moment but I don't think it's considered reliable yet.

If you find anything about getting xorg and xfree to live together please let me know.
