Xfree86-4.0.2 problems!

hi
i've been trying to install the xfree86 on redhat 7.0 without any success.

during the installation no errors where reported ,and as a the "Install document " said i ran the script
XFee86 -configure
at the prompt.
the a message came that a file XF86Config.new file has been created in the /root/ directory and to test the config i should run

XFee86 -xf86config /root/XF86config.new

let me tell u something when i went thru this .new file i found that my display card had been identified.which is S3 prosavage PM133,and this was not identified with xFree86-4.0.1.

so ,when i ran the above command, the screen showed up B&W spots and then nothing came up,no messages, nothing.
after waiting for sometime i had to press ctrl+alt+backspace to kill it..

i had copied my old /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 diretories.can i use that to restore my display..........otherwise how can i fall back to Xfree864.0.1 now?

pls help!

from the sounds of it you had it working. XFree doesn't look pretty when there is no window manager running (such as KDE,Gnome or window maker). the balck and whit spots are the default background before your window manager has started.

what you need is an .xinitrc file. this starts your window manager when XFree is all ready.

open a text editor and put into a file named .xinitrc the following:

for kde do this
Code:
exec kde
if you want gnome then do this

Code:
exec gnome-session
and for window maker

Code:
exec wmaker

you could also set up kdm to give you a graphical login but im afraid i don;t know much about that.
