X - a portable, network-transparent window system
From the X manpage

It provides a graphical display for applications with a GUI interface to show up on.

It is very complicated software, it has a client and a server side, server provides drawing capabilities, and client just draws on your screen, so as was noted above if you want to look at linux GUIinterface you have to have X running on your system, it is not necessary for client and server to reside on one system, but in most cases they do reside on one system.
