XFree on a Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255

Hey, I've been fighting with getting XFree to display correctly and I'm afraid I won't get any help because I THINK the problem is with the vsync and hsync.

Firstly I have on this laptop an nVidia Geforce4 420 Go w/ 32 MB external memory. The screen is a 1024x768 XGA, TFT LCD. I have searched all over, called Toshiba, the maker of the screen (Samsung) and other dealers about getting the vsync and no one knows, and it is not on the internet.

What stinks is that when I startx, I see the nVidia logo and it looks just beautiful, but then when X starts after that I see all kinds of ugly vertical lines all over the screen. IF I use XFree86 -configure, it gets to the screen and I can move my mouse (the cursor looks like an X) but as soon as I press Alt-Ctrl-Backspace, the screen goes garbled again. I am sure that my XF86Config is configured correctly for the graphics card and the nvidia module is loaded correctly, but I can't for the life of me figure out the correct screen settings. Then again is that what's going on here?

It is XFree86 4.3 and Gentoo Linux 1.4 on a 2.6.4 kernel

I found this page too:

http://linux.toshiba-dme.co.jp/linux/

And it looks like everyone else is just THRILLED with this laptop and has no trouble getting hte screen to work. Sucks.

check Nvidia site, download the "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg.run" and the "readme".
somewhere there are instructions on how to get the "ugly black stripe" on the right side to go away.
my horiz and vert are set at 50, 60 respectivly, but in the readme there is a formula for calculating the vert and horiz settings, dependent on video card\board memory per pixel, and screen size.

Would someone please look at a few things in particular in my log that are weird to me, just might be the problem:

First, for a while down there it looks like it can't find a suitable resolution, because the hsync or vrefresh is out of range. Then again maybe that is routine.

Also at the end, it says that the server failed because a certain font can't be loaded. Is this important?
