XFCE4-Synaptic problem, can't find executables.
 

Good Day,

I have just installed Debian-XFCE4 system on my P3 800 Compaq Armada, I used Synaptic to download programs I need for my work, OpenOffice, GIMP ect, while these have been successfully downloaded and installed (I can even access some of them by the run command) XFCE does not pick them up and add them to the menu. Neither can I find the executable files or icons so that I can add them manually.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe I need to do some sort of installation process outside of Synaptic. Which doesn't make sense as I can access OpenOffice by the run command, likewise with Mozilla-Firefox. I will try some others, but for the moment I am clueless (for instance I downloaded SIRC to get on the #debian room and ask my real-time questions, but the run command cannot find sirc.
Would be very grateful for any feedback and suggestions.

I think I found out the reason why. I did not have all the packages for XFCE4 installed. I would however like to know where the executables and icons for applications like OO are stored anyone??

You generally don't need to know where the executables are stored in order to run them. For example, if you want to create a launcher for Firefox, you create the launcher, and in "command," you simply put Firefox.

That said, executables are usually stored in /sbin /bin or /usr/bin
