Xfce not restoring open files in applications

I hope this makes sense...

Let's say I work on a bunch of files in gvim and/or emacs. I'm also running Xfce-session. I save this session when I logout. Then I come back, and I see all these gvim and/or emacs windows open but the files are no longer there. Is there any way to make Xfce not only remember your session but what you actually had open in the applications running in that session?

btw, i'm running slack 12, if that matters.
