xfce desktop gives green screen with ms lifecam

I'm running fedora 25 with an ms lifecam cinema webcam. If I log into the standard gnome desktop the webcam works fine but I also installed xfce desktop and if I log into xfce the webcam gives a green screen. This happens in both cheese and vlc. Obviously something is missing in xfce that the webcam needs. Can anyone tell me what I need to install? (or configure?).

Gnome has a sophisticated multimedia layer than XFCE just doesn't have. It might be possible to get it working in XFCE. But that's why I use gnome. Stuff just tends to work like that. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

hi thanks I figured that would be the case but hoped I could find and add the necessary multimedia layer to xfce but i don't know what that is. I also use x11vnc on the machine but it doesn't work in gnome, I can never get a connection but I can in xfce. In the meantime I've discovered that both webcam and x11vnc will work together in cinammon desktop so I'm using that. I'd still like to get the webcam working in xfce if possible though.

is it a uvc compliant cam?

try this

Code:
lsusb (and publish your output)
lsmod | grep uvc
if cam is uvc....you can try to install guvcview which runs on xfce

aus9 thanks, I installed guvcview and now the webcam is working in cheese in xfce but not in vlc. I suppose I'll have to dig deeper regarding that.

vlc

never used it as I prefer guvcview to record video anyhow try this
https://www.vlchelp.com/how-to-recor...-media-player/

plus the guide does not work for me, as I can't get direct show to show....but mine is usb lead webcam not inbuilt. If that makes a diff.

ahh that may be a windows codec...sorry about that.

instead of directshow see if /dev/video* is available
