xfce

in the xfce menu, how would you make it to look for programs in another directory other than /usr/bin ? the reason being i've got a couple of programs installed in /usr/local/bin (most important one being xine) but they are not listed in the xfce menu...

You can manually add them to the menu if they are not found. I am sure XFCE can find menu entires in /usr/local but you would have to fiddle with the XDG menu paths. You could search on google for how to do this.

actually i might be wrong in stating that it only looks in /usr/bin as when i installed mplayer yesterday in /usr/local/bin it is now listed in the xfce menu but other programs in the same directory such as xine, realplay are not...

i looked in the /usr/share/applications directory and it seems like nearlly all the non-kde programs are listed in there bar a few others such as mplayer are on the xfce menu...

edit: looking in to the matter further it appears programs that have a
*.desktop entry in .../share/applications are only listed in the xfce menu...
now need to find out why xine didnt create such an entry in ...share/applications as i compiled in from source...
