XF86Config and RedHat 7.2
 

Hi everyone!

I really don't know if I'm asking the right question here, but hopefully someone'll be able to help me. I'm trying to use an XF86Config-4 file someone posted on the internet for my laptop. Note that I said 'XF86Config-4' , not 'XF86Config'. So I copy the file over the original in the /etc/X11 directory and run startx. It seems that startx reads only the XF86Config file for startup data. Does anyone know how to get RedHat 7.2 to read the XF86Config-4 file?

I really don't know what the difference is between these two files. Anyone know? Copying one over the other seems to generate lots of script errors.

Like I said, with my limited Linux experience, I really don't know if I'm asking the right question. Maybe I'm approaching the problem the wrong way, I don't know. Can someone please help me?

RH7.2 uses the 'newer' standard XF86Config-4 file by default, so it shouldn't be looking at the XF86Config unless the -4 file is gone or unreadable. Copying one over your old one that's not specific to your system will cause alot of errors. It's best to edit your own for what you need. You may have a backup with a tilde ~ marking it so, that you can rename to restore what YOUR system wants. What are you trying to do exactly anyhow?

Thanks for the input. I'm trying to get my Cyberblade XP working. Currently the card is virtually unsupported by XFree86 4.1.0, but some people have had success and have posted their XF86Config-4 files -- I'm trying to use those.

I figured it out -- Initially installing RedHat defaulted to the Trident Cyberblade XP -- since the card is virtually unsupported, XFree86 defaults to an older version (3.3.6) for SVGA compatibility. Because of this, XFree86 reads the XF86Config file instead of XF86Config-4. I ended up reinstalling Linux and choosing a video card that uses 4.1.0, and then I replaced the XF86Config-4 file, and everything worked.

Yea i had the same prob. I have a HP5430 with a cyberbladexp.
Now when i install any version of linux, i select cyber 9525 as my video card and select it to boot to command line. Then after it reboots, i edit XF86Config-4 and add the line: ChipSet "cyberbladeXPm" under the device settings for my video card and it works great.
