xdmcp in kubuntu

system 1:
laptop with kubuntu (x86)
login works with gnome, the rest works with kde
got xdmcp to work both as server and client

system 2:
computer with kubuntu (x86_46)
only works with kde (and is not able to install gdm)
can only login to xdmcp servers

I have not been able to get the xdmcp server to work on my second system, which I was planning to use as my xdmcp host (because of the speed). In ubuntu and on my second system I can start gdmsetup from my panel, on my second system I [U]had[\U] this starter, but it vanished . Who can help me?

SO, you're able to establish an XDMCP connection with another Linux box and login as if you were at the console of the other Linux box?

This is something I'm interested in getting running. I run XFree86 4.5.0 on my Slackware based system at home and I want to connect to another Linux box via XDMCP.

How did you get this working?

Peace...

I got it working by installing gdm and uninstalling kdm. Unfortunately for my work I now have to run windows on all of my systems besides my computers
I know that the login manager of gnome works perfectly with the xdmcp server and client. The login manager of kde might work as server but I didn't really figure out how. If that doesn't work you will have to try the previous (by spoooon) or use vnc.

So, I would login to the remote box using ssh and "tunnel" X clients over the ssh connection? How does one start an XDMCP session that way?

Peace...

Ok, so when you switched to gdm, it actually displays a list of machines on the network willing to handle XDMCP connections as well as giving you a way to login to the local machine?

I've used the X-Win32 X server for Windows and when I fire it up in XDMCP broadcast mode, it displays a list of machines willing to accept XDMCP connections. I choose my machine and am prompted with a login window, as if I was sitting at the machine.

I don't expect XFree86 or X.org to behave exactly that way, but I'm wanting to gain that kind of access from one Linux box to another.

Also, is this something I can do in a Xnest window? Have the XDMCP session running in a Xnest window would be neat.

Thanks!

Peace...

I'm sorry. You don't log in to an X session this way. So if that's what you need then this is not what you want. But if you just want to use individual X apps, then this works.

Yeah, I was confused by your mentioning ssh since I already know how to run X clients this way. I'm looking to use XDMCP from Linux to Linux.

EDIT: One quick question, is there an assumption in this thread that XDM is XDMCP?

Peace...
