xdm and glslideshow

Riddle me this... I log into my box... su to root and start xdm (just tryin it out, was never to fond of login managers). I log in (and at this point xscreensaver gets started according to .xsession). Screensaver comes on and I realize that glslideshow (and a couple other image grabbing screensavers) while they operate as usual they don't display an image... but instead the square black n grey checkerboard of X.

So to check that something didn't break I logout... kill xdm... and login from the command prompt with xinit. I go through the xscreensaver-demo and check out glslideshow again and it works perfectly.

What's different from starting X with xinit as oppossed to xdm that kinda broke glslideshow?
