Have installed Redhat 7. Got an S3 Savage 3D AGP card (391 chipset). Can only do a text install as the GUI gets too corrupted during a graphix install. Anyway, Xconfigurator probes the card and comes back detecting another type of S3 card, not the Savage. If I manually configure a generic monitor (SVGA 1024x768 @ 70hz) GNOME will start OK but the GUI gets all corrupted again and is almost unusable. I found an article on a similar problem and managed to make the changes listed at point 1 (below). Rebooted, the system, start GNOME, no corruption now, but its like running a Windows system on a standard VGA driver, no full colour, no smooth rendering etc. How can I configure Linux to use the Savage card at full potential without getting GUI corruption? Being a newbie to LinuxI don't know what point 2 (below) is all about or how it compares to the fix I did. Can anybody explain please?, appreciate any help. Sorry if this is long winded.

There are a couple of things you can do to get around this.
1. Add the "noaccel" option to the "Graphics Device" listing in yourXF86Config file (/etc/X11/XF86Config) like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "S3 Savage (generic)"
Option "noaccel"
Option "sw_cursor"
VideoRam 8192
EndSection

2. Downgrade the XFree86-SVGA-3.3.6-33 package that comes in Red Hat 7 to XFree86-SVGA-3.3.6-20, the Red Hat Linux 6.2 SVGA server. This has fixed the problem in several cases.

According to the xfree site the only X server that supports that card is the XF86_VGA16 which explains why you are not getting very good video. I am pretty sure there used to be a s3_savage X server, but I don't seem to see it around. Is anyone using one of these?
